UFC 277 | Main Card Preview
Saturday, July 30th (10:00 PM EST Main Card, 8:00 PM EST Prelims, 6:00 PM EST Early Prelims)
Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes
WATCH - #1 Amanda Nunes was the unstoppable WMMA Goat. A titan of the sport whose talents towered large over her measly opponents. Opponents that never stood a fighting chance… or so we all thought. In hindsight, the downfall was obvious. It turns out that spending 2 years gallivanting around as a double champ of a fake women’s featherweight division and beating up on part-time fighters leads to some serious drop-off in skill. A drop-off large enough for the shallow depths of the women’s bantamweight division to catch up to you. Now with the realization that she is no longer in the prime of her career, can Nunes make the changes necessary to bounce back and reclaim her only real belt? Or will the champion Pena shock the world by once again proving that any woman that spends time fighting at 145 is easily beatable.
MMAalgo Bet - Julianna Pena 3.5u @ +230 (better than -132.7)
Brandon Moreno vs. Kai Kara-France
WATCH - This is the people’s main event! The only reason this PPV isn’t straight to DVD! These two fighters are singularly responsible for the revival of the flyweight division since Cejudo and Mighty Mouse left the division, and finally we get to see them clash against each other in this inevitable banger! Will #1 Moreno ever make it back to the undisputed title fights he seemed so comfortable warring in, or will #2 Kai Kara-France continue his miracle run paved with violence to the top?!
Derrick Lewis vs. Sergei Pavlovich
WATCH - Watching #5 Derrick Lewis is like watching soccer during the world cup as an American. You sit on your couch and expect to see some serious action. Nothing happens for 30 minutes and your optimism on ever seeing a goal starts to wane. Finally you give up and start making your way to the bathroom just to hear screams from your TV in the distance. But its too late. You run back into the living room but the goal has already been scored and the celebrating has commenced. Lewis has already smashed his opponent’s skull into pieces out of nowhere or randomly turtled up and absorbed finishing strikes. It was exciting for approximately 3 seconds, and you missed. Hopefully #11 Pavlovich, who has finished all 3 of his last 3 fights in the first round forces the finish early enough for us to catch it live.
Alexandre Pantoja vs. Alex Perez
WATCH - These are two of the most talented flyweights in the world and the most exciting flyweight matchup available, other than the co-main fight on this very card. #4 Pantoja has battled it out with all the main flyweight contenders like Moreno and Figgy and is probably the best UFC flyweight ever to not receive a title shot. #6 Perez is lacking in quality match-ups, but is coming off a title shot loss that most considered to be way too rushed. Two polar opposite, but impressive resumes, ready to see who really belongs in the upper echelon of this flyweight division.
Magomed Ankalaev vs. Anthony Smith
WATCH - The UFC keeps trying to feed him to the young wolves, but #5 Anthony Smith just won’t go stop tearing them apart. He looked like he was in his final days as a fighter after his devastating loss to #1 Glover Texeira, a fight seen at the time as between two decaying veterans at the end of their careers. But since then Glover briefly was the light heavyweight champion and Anthony Smith is now on a 3 fight win-streak. Just one more wolf to and Anthony Smith can make another shot at the title, but this is the end of the movie and therefore this final obstacle is bigger and badder than all the rest. #4 Ankalaev isn’t as exciting as he was when he was first working his way up the division, but his 8 fight win streak has been domination and it’s going to be a real shock if Anthony Smith can pull off the veteran upset once again.
